Creatine is a perfect training companion for building muscle. To achieve optimal results, taking 3-5 g of creatine daily is sufficient. Taking more creatine is pointless because your body would not utilize it and would excrete it unused.
Creatine doesn't make you fat! The topic is a bit more complicated. Basically, you can gain weight by eating pasta. Unlike other nutritional supplements for building muscle, the time of taking creatine is not significantly important for its effectiveness. Therefore, there is no perfect time to take it.
Creatine should be taken with sufficient liquid (at least 300 ml). On non-training days, you can take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. You can use water or juice.
You can also take creatine after training. A protein shake is particularly suitable for this.
Side effects usually only occur in connection with a significant overdose of creatine of far more than 10g per day. However, this can then lead to diarrhea, flatulence and other digestive problems.
There is some evidence that creatine is absorbed more efficiently when combined with insulin. To optimize absorption, it is therefore recommended to take creatine with protein such as a protein shake and/or carbohydrate such as a sports drink or juice. However, this is only to maximize absorption and is by no means mandatory. Taking creatine with water and on an empty stomach is also effective.
